Beyond the Blockbusters

Spring 2002

East is East East is East
British film about a Pakistani family living in England during the 1970s. Is it a comedy? Sometimes. Is it a tragedy? Maybe. It's really the poignant story of how one immigrant family copes with the conflicting values of two cultures. Expect to laugh, and then to cry. [R]
East/West East/West (French and Russian, with English subtitles)
Russian émigrés return to a life in a post-war Soviet Union of oppression, political chicanery and virtual imprisonment. A great cast, including Catherine Deneuve. Beautifully filmed. Excellent score. Includes a classic Cold-War thriller ending. [PG-13]
Entre Nous Entre Nous (French with English subtitles)
Two of France's great film actresses, Miou-Miou and Isabelle Huppert, star in this post-war story of friendship and unsatisfactory marriages. The two friends find in each other what they do not find in marriage. A sad, beautifully filmed movie with affecting performances by both women. [PG]
Once Upon a Time...When We Were Colored Once Upon a Time...When We Were Colored
The touching story of an African-American family living in the deep South during the middle of the 20th Century. [PG]
Prescription Murder Prescription Murder
The very first appearance of Peter Falk as the permanently unpressed sleuth. He goes after a psychiatrist who strangled his overbearing wife. Gene Barry co-stars as the first in a long line of arrogant killers who make the mistake of underestimating the good lieutenant. [Not Rated]
The Sandlot The Sandlot
Painfully shy new kid in town comes out of his shell with the help of the neighborhood’s star baseball player. Delightful paean to life in ’60s America. [PG]
Smoke Signals Smoke Signals
The story of two young Coer d’Alene Indians who embark on a bus journey to claim the remains of a relative. Part comedy, part drama, part road picture, part buddy picture, part character study, all memorable. [PG-13]
A Walk in the Clouds A Walk in the Clouds
A GI returning from World War II meets an unmarried, pregnant woman and agrees to pose as her husband to spare her the wrath of her domineering father. [PG-13]
