1980: First Kurzweil Reading Machine placed in Central Library for the blind and visually impaired through New York State legislative provision

1981: A solid state electronic security system installed at Central Library to protect materials

1981: Cable television wired throughout libraries with White Branch being the first to utilize cable tv for the broadcast of Prince Charles and Lady Diana’s wedding in July

1981: Central Library remained open on Saturdays during the summer for the first time in more than 20 years to comply with state-mandated hours of operation of 60 hours per week
