Instruction

Computer software programs that help adults learn English and improve reading, writing and speaking skills are available for use at the Central Library. Literacy staff conduct short training sessions on the software programs and other library resources during regularly scheduled computer labs or by appointment.

Conversation groups are also offered, for those who wish to practice their English speaking and listening skills.

Adults who wish to improve their literacy skills may call (315) 435-1835 for details and session times.

Tutors will find many helpful ideas for instruction, including blackline masters of worksheets for their learners.

Neighborhood Literacy Resources

Some literacy materials and services are available at branch and member libraries. Several libraries have small collections of literacy books, kits and videos. A few offer computers and software. Most of these collections were created or expanded through Federal Library Services & Technology Act funds, awarded to The New York State Library by the Federal Institute of Museum & Library Services.

White Branch Library (763 Butternut St. Syracuse, NY 13208) has a new literacy lab featuring 4 computers dedicated to English language learners and those seeking US citizenship. There is also a collection of books, videos, DVDs, and kits, for beginning, intermediate an advanced learners. For more information, or to schedule a computer appointment call 315-435-3519.
