Position

The Board of Trustees of the Onondaga Free Library is seeking an individual who is eager to lead and mentor a staff of 25 within the confines of the library and has a willingness to become a vibrant force within the Syracuse community.  The Director will be involved in not only the every day life of a vibrant library serving the needs of 8000 patrons, but will also lead the staff through an exciting physical expansion and renovation planned for 2008-9. He/she will work with the Board to establish the library not only as a resource facility for the community, but as a cultural and educational destination.

Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting directly to the Board of Trustees, the director will serve as the administrator overseeing the daily operations and activities of the library.  Duties will include hiring and supervising of staff, preparing, presenting and overseeing the budget, being actively involved with the library collections, research and technology, and overseeing the maintenance of the building and grounds. The director will be expected to maintain an active and visible role within the community, and be proactive in regards to pursuing funding sources and PR opportunities.

The director will keep the necessary records of the library and compile reports, statistics and other information for the Board, local funding sources, OCPL and the State Education Department.

Qualifications

Candidates must have an ALA accredited MLS degree; be in possession of or eligible for NY State Public Librarian’s Certificate; a minimum 3 years satisfactory professional library experience in libraries or library system, including at least 1 year administrative experience.  In addition, the candidate should have excellent verbal and written communication skills, a working understanding of current library technology, fiscal knowledge, and the ability to work effectively with a library board, employees, volunteers and the community.  Grant writing experience would also be beneficial.

Compensation

Salary is commensurate with experience.
